The Sunrise-Seto/Izumo is the only sleeper train in Japan that operates a daily round trip.
The Sunrise-Seto operates between Tokyo and Takamatsu in the Shikoku region, and the Sunrise-Izumo, which decouples from the Sunrise Seto at Okayama, operates between Tokyo and Izumo City in the San'in region.

This train service is popular with tourists eager to make the most of their time, as it enables them to depart Tokyo after the last available flight and reach Takamatsu before the first scheduled flight. The train is a powerful lure for train lovers.
Why not experience an overnight train journey that is a unique alternative to flying or taking the Shinkansen?

The Appeal of Sunrise-Seto and the Variety of Sleeping Berths and Seating Choices
The Sunrise-Seto/Izumo debuted in 1998. On the platform, the train's exterior, inspired by the concept of "a new dawn, the start of a fresh day," has a stunning visual impact.

The private compartment interiors, designed in partnership with a housing manufacturer, feature a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, highlighted by wooden materials.

Single Deluxe(Type A compartment)
It is the highest-quality private compartment. In addition to its bed, the private compartment is designed like business hotel room, equipped with a desk, chair, washbasin, and storage for luggage. A set of personal care products and a card for shower access are provided solely to Type A compartment passengers.

Single(Type B compartment)
It is a standard private compartment. Most of the available compartments are this type. Along with a bed, the private compartment is equipped with a simple desk and storage for luggage. Single compartments offer the option of being on the first or second level. One on the second level features a curved window that extends towards the ceiling, offering a clear view of the night sky.

Sunrise Twin(Type B compartment)
It is a private compartment equipped with a pair of beds side by side, similar to a twin room in a hotel. There is a simple desk and a luggage storage area. This type of compartment is recommended for friends, couples and people traveling with a child.

Single Twin(Type B compartment)
It is a private compartment with bunk beds. The lower bed can be converted into a seat. You have the option of occupying the private compartment alone, using the upper bed as your bed and the lower bed as a seat.

Solo(Type B compartment)
A Solo compartment is slightly less spacious than a Single compartment and has a lower ceiling. You can enjoy the cozy atmosphere of a hidden hideout. The compartment includes just a bed and a door. Please note that the luggage storage area is intended for only luggage about the size of an airplane carry-on, with maximum total linear dimension of 115 cm.

Nobi Nobi Seat
It is the most affordable seat on the train. Because the Nobi Nobi Seat is considered a seat and not a private compartment, passengers can use it without having to pay for a sleeping berth. Each passenger is allocated approximately one tatami mat's worth of space to extend their legs and lie flat. If you prioritize privacy, it is best to choose a private compartment, as the only thing separating you from your neighbor is a partial wall.

The other shared spaces are as follows:
Shower Room
You can buy a shower access card at the ticket vending machine on the train. However, because the number of cards is limited, they are often sold out before the train departs. Alternatively, you can use the shower facilities around Tokyo Station before boarding the train.

Lounge
Cars 3 and 10 feature lounges equipped with seats facing the windows, open to all passengers. They are an opportunity to watch the scenery change or a waiting area for the showers.

A Splendid Moment to Appreciate the Sunrise Over the Seto Inland Sea
The next morning, the Sunrise-Seto and Izumo are decoupled at Okayama Station, and the Sunrise-Seto heads towards Takamatsu. The train crosses the Seto Ohashi bridge around 7 o'clock.

If this coincides with the sunrise, you may be able to see the Seto Inland Sea glowing in the morning light through the train window.

The train arrives at Takamatsu Station at 7:27 a.m.
Some udon restaurants near the station are open from the early morning. Begin your sightseeing adventure in Takamatsu with a delicious bowl of morning udon.
